Red Light, Green Light
Players dribble toward the coach. On “green light” they dribble forward; on “red light” they stop the ball dead with the sole of the foot.
- Why it matters
- Teaches a child to look up while the ball is at their feet. A player who can lift their head sees the pass before the pass is needed.
Grow it
- U5–U6
- Keep the ball close (“puppy paws”). Short distance of about 15 yards and lots of enthusiasm.
- U7–U8
- Add a “yellow light” for toe taps or skill moves. Play rounds using only the weaker foot.
- U9
- Use turning moves, such as a Cruyff turn, on red light. Raise the speed and tempo.
